What People Are Saying About HREC

“The student reaction to the workshops of HREC was overwhelmingly positive. It was perhaps the first time (these incarcerated youth) they have looked at their own biases or had made the connection between bias, hatred and violence. I wish this training could be incorporated in all curricula, but until then, HREC has a vital role to play. I highly recommend their services.”

-Patrick Colclough, Teacher, Wasatch Youth Center

Executive Director

Carla Kelley, as a human rights activist, educator, diversity trainer, mother, grandmother and foster parent, teaches the importance of developing respect for all humanity. Kelley believes, “We must model and teach respect for all humanity as our hope for tomorrow relies upon it.”

After many years of caring for her family and owning and operating her catering business, Kelley returned to school. She attended the University of Utah for three years and then received a scholarship to the California Institute of Integral Learning in San Francisco, California to complete her degree. In 1998, she graduated with a B.A. in Integral Studies. These studies teach the importance of a more unifying vision of the world. Kelly’s graduating project focused on anti-bias education and peace building in her community.

In addition to being the director of HREC, Kelly is adjunct faculty teaching Human Rights at the Center City Charter School in Salt Lake City. Further experience includes facilitations and training as an anti-bias educator for the Anti-Defamation League.
