Carla Kelley, Executive Director and Founder of The Human Rights Education Center of Utah is named a 2011 Purpose Prize Fellow

SALT LAKE CITY — Civic Ventures today announced Carla Kelley, Executive Director and Founder of the Human Rights Education Center of Utah (HREC) as a 2011 Purpose Prize Fellow recipient. Carla was recognized as a social entrepreneur over 60 who is using her experience and passion to make an extraordinary impact advancing human rights education.
Since its founding in 1998, Carla Kelley though HREC has educated thousands of youth and adults addressing bias, bullying and discrimination. HREC believes that discrimination, intolerance, bullying and disrespectful behaviors are preventable through empathy and education.
Carla says that she is tremendously honored and humbled to be accepted as a Purpose Prize Fellow. She proudly accepts this honor with gratitude to her board of directors; funders and volunteers whose love and dedication makes this important work possible. “It takes a village and I am so proud to know those who make this work possible in our community.”
The approximately 300 attendees of the invitation-only Purpose Prize awards ceremony will hear from Prize judges, including NBC’s Jane Pauley and Sherry Lansing, CEO of The Sherry Lansing Foundation and former chair of Paramount Motion Picture Group. The 28 judges – leaders in business, politics, journalism and the nonprofit sector – chose the five winners from a pool of more than 1,000 nominees.
Funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies and the John Templeton Foundation, The Purpose Prize is a program of Civic Ventures’ Encore Careers campaign (www.encore.org), which aims to engage millions of boomers in encore careers combining personal meaning, continued income and social impact in the second half of life.
Established in 1999, HREC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides educational programs that address bias, bullying and discrimination in the community. HREC advocates for public policies that promote equality, diversity and respect for everyone. HREC was instrumental in getting a Utah Anti-Bullying Resolution passed in the 2006 legislative session. HREC has been recognized for our work in the community with many awards, including the prestigious Alliance for Unity Award in 2005, The 2007 Award from The Utah Commission for Women and Families, 2009 Pete Suazo Social Justice Award for Community Education and Advocacy from the University of Utah College of Social Work and, 2011 Purpose Prize Fellow recipient.
